Cast Aluminium
THICK CAST SHEETS (PLATES)
They are obtained by cutting continuously cast aluminium slabs into plates of different thicknesses and standard formats. They are homogeneous materials, with internal stresses at a very low level, recommended for applications requiring precision in maintaining dimensional quotas after machining. Usually, there are two variants for some alloys suitable for casting:
- Six-sides sawn
- Precision (with milling on one or both sides and coated)
Cast plates six-sides sawn - aluminium block
- alloy range: 5083, 7021
- standard format: 1540x3048mm
- thicknesses between 8-300mm
- thickness tolerance [mm]: plates 150: -0/+2.5; plates > 150: -0/+5
Ground cast plates - precision plates
- the plates are milled and coated on both sides
- alloy range: 5083, 7021, 5083 elox plus
- thicknesses between 8-150mm
- thickness tolerance [mm]: +/- 0.10
- flatness tolerance [mm]: plates 8-12.7 0.40; plates > 12.7 0.13; plates 15: 0.40; plates > 15: 0.25
Advantages of cast plates
- excellent machinability by chipping → fine chips of small sizes
- constant mechanical properties in the alloy mass
- low internal stress → high speed mechanical machining (cutting, milling, drilling, etc.) regardless of material thickness
- homogeneous microstructure → increase the lifetime of machines and machining tools
- very good corrosion resistance in environment (for alloy 5083)
